O deputy Secretary of State and the Internal Administration today said that, until August this year, 344 people have been banned from entering sports grounds and, of these, 288 were convicted.

“At national level, and until August 2026, the data indicates that there are 344 people with measures to ban access to sports grounds, of which 288 were convicted. Only this year”, said Paulo Simões Ribeiro.

The ruler spoke at the opening of the fourth edition of the S4 – International Congress Safety, Security, Service at Sports Events (protection, security, and reception at sporting events, free translation), which takes place in Viseu until Wednesday, organized by the Authority for the Prevention and Combating Violence Sport (APCVD).

The use of pyrotechnic material is a “core cause” of these bans and convictions, but there are other challenges for safety in sports grounds such as “reactions among rival supporters”.

Challenges that “must be fought so that “whole families, from children to older people, can access without fear and in safety” to support their club.

Another challenge is the fight against “the crime of piracy, especially the counterfeiting of sports equipment, such as the shirts of clubs”.

The Secretary of State also said that the government will take a “decision in due time, with all tranquility” on the entry of alcohol into sports grounds.

This, after assuming that it already has in its possession the reports of all entities involved in the pilot project that took place in August, in the Stadium City of Coimbra, in the game of Supertaça Cândido Oliveira football, between FC Porto and Torreense.

With the World Cup of 2030 on the horizon, the ruler stressed that one of the challenges also involves “border management”, work that must be done together with other entities.

“ Control of our external borders is an essential tool for internal security, for the country, but also for the European Union, Portugal being one of the major western borders and we are aware of our responsibility”, he said.
