Dand according to the latest Ifo Business Survey, today released, in the German economy as a whole, 24.9% of employees in Germany worked from home in August.

“For years, we have not seen significant changes in the proportion of employees working from home – whether in general or by sector,” says Ifo’s Jean Victor Alipour.

The research also states that companies operating in wholesale sales reported a participation of 17.7% of employees in teleworking, while in those operating in the manufacturing industry the number was 16.4%.

The percentages were significantly lower in the retail and construction sectors, where 6.2% and 5.1% of employees, respectively, worked at least part of the time from home in August.

“ Our conclusions are consistent with international analyses, according to which remote work has been firmly established in most industrialised countries,” says Alipour.

A previous analysis of online job ads identified a similar picture, showing that one in five job ads in Germany includes the option to work from home.

Participation was particularly high in job advertisements in financial and insurance services, with 42%.

The analysis covered more than 93 million job advertisements published from January 2014 to June 2025.
