O mayor of New York, Zohran Mamdani, celebrated today the election of Democrat Abdul El-Sayed to the Senate by the State of Michigan, which makes him the first Muslim senator in the United States.
“His election means a lot to many people,” Mamdani said in a press conference that exactly a year ago the first Muslim mayor of the Great Apple was elected.
The mayor pointed out that El-Sayed managed to impose himself on Republican Mike Rogers, despite the “extraordinary amount of money that his opposition spent” or “the racism and slander he faced daily.”.
“ It is incredibly exciting to see, as he himself said tonight, that they won the good ones,” Mamdani added.
In general the mayor warned his supporters, after the broad electoral victory, that people now need to feel the political differences “in their pockets”.
“ It is not enough for us Democrats to come to power; we must use that power to achieve a change that people can notice in their pockets,” he said.
Mamdani asked Democratic congressmen, who will take office in January, to focus on improving people's standard of living.
Vice President “J. D. Vance asked the Americans to give him another two years. People cannot allow this two years, when they have to pay the rent on the first day of the month, pay their children's school or go to the supermarket today ", he said.
He therefore asked the Democrats to understand “the urgency of fulfilling” the mandate they were given at the polls.
