Matthew Fernandes generates discussion: “In one game you are Modric, in another you are stupid”

Rthis Friday, Zerbi took advantage of the traditional press conference forecasting to meet the eighth day of the Premier League, which will put, face to face, the ‘your’ Tottenham and the Crystal Palace, to carry out a ‘access’ defense to Mateus Fernandes, a player recently hired to West Ham, in exchange for a budget close to 100 million euros.

The Portuguese international has been the target of harsh criticism... which has become a ripple of praise since last weekend, when it was unanimously considered one of the best players in the field, in the victory achieved in the trip to Stamford Bridge, over Chelsea, by 0-2, even though there are people who say it already reminds Luka Modric.

Faced with this sudden change of opinion, the Italian coach fired: “You’re very funny, you know why? Because the world is running too fast. Two weeks ago, Mateus Fernandes had cost 80 million [pounds], it was a disastrous hire, a disastrous player, it was not good enough...”.

“ I told Matthew, on Monday or Sunday, ‘Do not listen to the media, do not see the media, do not follow what people say, because it is not true’. Now things have changed. In one game, you're a good player, you're a top player, like Luka Modric, and the next day, you're a stupid player, you can't play. And the next day, you become again...”, he continued.

“Matthew Fernandes was a very good player before the Chelsea game, and is the same player after the Chelsea game. He has to think about evolving, because, potentially, he can become one of the best averages in Europe in the near future. It was a great hire for Tottenham, above all, because it is a potential top player for Tottenham ", continued.

“ Other than that, for me, now, it's the same thing, but as with Savio... Sávio is another top player, such as Xavi Simons, such as Lucas Bergvall, as Archie Gray... ", completed the helmsman of the spurs, regarding the footballer trained in Sporting, which adds two assists after the ten games in which it was used, in this sports season of 2026/27.

The status of Tottenham

The divergence of visions regarding Mateus Fernandes arises following a start of the season also he "to the hiccups by Tottenham, which translated into a record of four defeats, three draws and other all wins, after ten matches held on all fronts in which the club is inserted.

As a result, the spurs currently live in the 14th position of the Premier League, with only nine points added to 24 possible, as much as Bournemouth and only three more than Nottingham Forest, the team that lives immediately below the ‘water line’, so cannot afford to ‘slip’ again.

In the middle, the history of London formation was also eliminated from the League Cup, right in the third elimination, due to the defeat suffered in Anfield, in front of Liverpool, by 3-1 (game in which the Portuguese international left the bench of alternates to initial an assistance, for the goal of Conor Gallagher, which proved insufficient to avoid the ‘tomb’).
