A prime Minister of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, revealed this Sunday that he will present a law for Italy to have “a maximum number of foreign students per class” and “to prohibit the use of burca and niqab in schools”.
“ A measure that is about to be presented to the Council of Ministers introduces, by law, a maximum number of foreign students per class, the obligation of those in charge of education of foreign students with serious problems of school integration to learn Italian, and the prohibition of the use of burca and niqab in schools”, Meloni said during an event of Gioventù Nazionale, the young wing of his party – Fratelli d’Italia.
For Meloni, “it simply cannot happen that in an Italian classroom Italian children feel trapped because they are a minority”.
“ You go to school with your face uncovered, and in Italy, no one, in the name of a real or supposed tradition, can decide that a young woman should hide. Equality between men and women is non-negotiable ", defended.
Meloni also announced that establishments offering vocational training will be called “institutes”, so that “it is clear from their names that they are schools of equal value and that people who attend them have the same value”.
With regard to education, he criticized the practice of the general approval notes, because “the school for all must be able to recognize both achievements and weaknesses, must offer motivation to those who are ahead and support to those who have difficulties”, but “on the other hand, when intending to give everyone a note of approval, the merit is underestimated and the gaps are hidden, harming both those who need motivation and those who need support”.
“ Therefore, the first duty of the school is to evaluate the child, to teach him that the judgment exists, that the errors are useful for growth and that education and respect are based on the rules and not on their denial”, said the Prime Minister.
Meloni also said that his government raised “ordinary funding for universities at their highest level ever, with a fund of €9,400 million, which represents 25 % more than in 2019”.
