“ O use of critical technology and minerals as weapons can become an obstacle to our shared progress. For this reason, we have stressed the importance of inclusion in the adoption of technology”, said Narendra Modi in his speech during the plenary session of the leaders that closes the main part of the BRICS summit in New Delhi, quoted by Efe.
On Saturday, the leaders of the extended bloc unanimously approved the New Delhi Declaration, in which they created a common front to demand “trusted, diversified, resilient, equitable and sustainable” supply chains that guarantee added value.
Modi asked partners to become “standard creators” in technological development, to play an active role in the growth of artificial intelligence (IA), and proposed ten measures for a roadmap to transform global governance.
Modi’s words, in the presence of Chinese President Xi Jinping, leader of supply chains, highlight the group’s difficult commercial dynamics due to the mastery of the processing of rare earths and minerals essential to the AI race.
Last year, China, which processes about 90% of the world’s rare earths, strengthened its export controls for advanced technology manufacturing in the context of the trade war with the United States, holding a vital exchange for India in its strategy of expanding the manufacturing industry and clean energy sectors.
India has strengthened alliances inside and outside the bloc to bridge this gap. In February, New Delhi signed a cooperation agreement with Brazil on critical minerals and rare earths in the context of the IA race.
“ We may have [the BRICS] our roots in different realities, but together we grow through cooperation and prosper for humanity,” Modi concluded.
