O chairman of the Committee on Budgets Internationals of the lower chamber of the Russian parliament, Pyotor Tolstoy, argued today to be more important to share spheres of influence with the US and China than the peace talks with Ukraine.
“If they [Vladimir Putin, Donald Trump and Xi Jinping] manage to address the security guarantees needed for the world, the division of spheres of influence will be more important than attempts to cease-fire in Ukraine,” Tolstoy said in statements to the TASS agency.
In November, Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed a summit with his American counterparts, Donald Trump, and Chinese counterparts Xi Jinping.
“ If these concerns were discussed during the meeting, it will be more important than Trump’s numerous attempts to start negotiations with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky,” he insisted.
The spokesman for the Kremlin, Dmitry Peskov, has already mentioned that the three countries are trying to reach a consensus on the summit agenda.
As you pointed out, if this consensus is reached, the summit will “attract attention from all over the world”.
Russia is interested in addressing international issues and the situation in Ukraine, but the US wants to discuss a new nuclear disarmament treaty that Beijing is opposed to.
