Dis the beginning of July that Sony and its PlayStation video game division are being harshly criticized for the decision to abandon the games in physical format from january 2028.
However, it seems that not all large companies in the video game industry have these plans.
Nintendo, which currently has its Switch 2, does not seem to have plans to stop releasing games in physical format. This is said by Nintendo’s vice president and general manager in Latin America, Bill van Zyll, in an interview with rodrigo Coelho YouTube channel.
“There are no plans to abandon games in physical format”, said the executive, noting that the Japanese company knows well how much the format continues to be appreciated by Nintendo players.
It must be stressed, however, that Nintendo will continue to bet in physical form as long as this makes sense to the company. Van Zyll himself notes that such a decision is informed by the public's preference and that as long as this remains, there are no plans for Nintendo to change direction.
“ Historically, we've been very agnostic, right? We base ourselves on consumer preferences and take that very seriously. We also have a platform that has just been launched. It's just over a year since we launched Switch 2. It has both digital and physical capabilities”, pointed van Zyl, indicating that (at least) until the launch of a new console there will be no plans to abandon the physical format.
