A Sony announced this week that, as of January 2028, it would stop launching physical games for its PlayStation consoles. Microsoft's video game division, Xbox, should take a similar step but, according to The Verge, is working on a feature to avoid attracting the fury of video game enthusiasts.
Says the publication microsoft is currently developing a feature that will allow you to transfer the games in physical format to the Xbox digital game library. The functionality is known internally as “Disc2Digital” and is allegedly currently being tested by Redmond technology workers.
It is important to stress that Microsoft has not yet communicated any intention to abandon the physical format in its consoles, but the development of this functionality seems to point to this.
The truth is that in recent years, we have seen an ever-increasing preference from players to buy the games in digital version, directly through PlayStation and Xbox virtual stores. Thus, it is possible that in the next generation of consoles we can watch the launch of platforms without any support for physical format.
