Por more harmless than it seems, there are daily behaviors that can lead to unusual and continuous ingestion of microplastics.
A nutritionist reveals to Very Well Health, some of the care that must be taken, from preparation to food storage and storage to reduce these risks.
These are the most common errors that “increase exposure to microplastics” in kitchens:
Reheat food in plastic containers
Warming food in the microwave in plastic airtight containers is enough to ensure the release of microplastics and nanoplastics in what you are about to eat. Alongside this, “these small plastic particles can accumulate in the body,” the expert says.
Dumping hot food in plastic
“ The heat of food weakens the bonds of plastic, which can release chemicals such as BPA and phthalates on food, both apparently harmful to health”, and may also cause microplastics to infiltrate food, exactly as it happens when it reheats plastic in the microwave.
Use plastic cutting boards for everything
In addition to the microplastics associated with this type of cooking materials, when cutting vegetables or bread on the same board where you usually put raw chicken, you can “significantly increase the risk of diseases transmitted by bacteria such as Salmonella, which survive on cutting boards and can be deposited between scratches” of this item.
