O croatian coach Niko Kovac renewed until the end of June 2029 the contract with Borussia Dortmund, today announced the German Football League club, in which Fábio Silva plays.
Kovac, 54, reached Dortmund in January 2025, at a time when Dortmund was 11th in the German League, and managed to stabilize the team, leading her to fourth place at the end of that season.
In 2025/26, Dortmund again secured access to the Champions League, being second-ranked by the Bundesliga, the same position he currently holds, still without defeats and only a draw in five meetings.
“Together we established a clear path to the development [of the club] and created important foundations for the future. Now we want to build on it. We have a clear view of how to play football, how to play as a team and how to achieve our goals,” Kovac said.
Former Croatian international, Kovac began his coaching career in Salzburg's B team before taking over the Croatian under-21 team in 2013/14, still rising in that season to the main team.
In 2015/16, Kovac took over the Eintracht Frankfurt, which led to the conquest of the German Cup in 2017/18, thanks to a triumph over Bayern Munich, a team that would be training in the following two seasons, winning two German Leagues, two Cups and a Champions League.
The Croatian coach later had tickets to Monaco and Wolfsburg before arriving at Borussia Dortmund.
