A The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) launched the RESIslands initiative in São Tomé and Príncipe to improve preparation for climate change within a project covering eight more African countries.
“São Tomé and Príncipe launched the RESIslands initiative to strengthen climate risk assessment, institutional capacity and climate investment preparation, with emphasis on protecting the communities and essential services on which they depend,” a UNECA statement sent to Lusa the week after the project was launched in Guinea-Bissau reads.
Financed by the Green Climate Fund (GCF) and implemented by (UNECA), RESIslands is a 30-month initiative supporting nine members of the Climate Commission of African Insular States (AICC), including the Lusophones Cape Verde, Equatorial Guinea and Guinea-Bissau.
In São Tomé and Príncipe, it will “support national capabilities to assess risks, strengthen climate information and prepare investment proposals aligned with the priorities” of this Lusophone African country.
“ The ambition is to transform national priorities into concrete actions and investments, with lasting benefits for people,” said UNECA’s programme manager Kjartan Fjeldsted.
Fjeldsted highlighted the country's natural resources, including its marine environment, forests and biodiversity, as well as the importance of protecting the foundations of agriculture, fisheries and sustainable tourism. It also recognized the active contribution of São Tomé and Príncipe to regional cooperation through AISCC.
