Dand according to the producer, Pedro Costa will receive the Robert Bresson Award on September 5th, being one of the parallel events of the Venice International Film Festival in Italy.
The Robert Bresson Prize annually recognizes a person in the cinema who “has given a testimony, relevant for his sincerity and intensity, about the difficult path of seeking the spiritual meaning of our life”, says the organization on the official page.
This distinction, which was already attributed in 2001 to Portuguese filmmaker Manoel de Oliveira, is an initiative of that foundation, together with the publication Rivista del Cinematographo, with the sponsorship of the dicasteries of Culture, Education and Communication of the Holy See.
“It is the only film prize in the world awarded by the Holy See”, says producer Clarão Companhia, reminding that Pedro Costa “has known how to reconcile aesthetic radicalism with ethical commitment, offering through cinema a powerful and coherent witness of the search for meaning that resides in the innermost of the human condition”.
Pedro Costa (1958, Lisbon) returns to Venice where he already presented the films “The Blood” (1989), “Bone” (1997) and “Where is your smile?” in 2001.
“ His films gave voice to the most vulnerable, immigrants and marginalized, turning their lives into works of extraordinary poetic and human power ", praised the producer.
Before Pedro Costa, this film award was awarded to Marco Bellocchio, Alice Rohrwacher, Lucrecia Martel, Ken Loach, Walter Salles, Wim Wenders and Theo Angelopoulos, among others.
