Plink less 34 people died in a shipwreck on the coast of the department of Kébémer, in the region of Louga, in northern Senegal, today released the state news agency APS.
Authorities had previously indicated that 21 people had died in the shipwreck.
The governor of Louga, Ndèye Nguénar Mbodj, visited the place today to supervise the identification and preservation of the bodies.
In a statement, Senegalese Interior and Public Security Minister Mouhamadou Makhtar Cissé expressed his “deep emotion and sadness” and conveyed the condolences of the President of the Republic and the Government to the families of the victims.
The Executive also reaffirmed its commitment to strengthen the fight against trafficking in human beings and cooperation with neighbouring countries.
According to the first information, the bodies were found by local authorities on the coast in the region of Tébène, where a survivor was also located.
Army and Fire Department teams were sent to the area to coordinate the rescue and transport of the bodies to forensic facilities in order to be identified.
For the time being, the authorities have not yet determined the causes of the accident or the total number of persons following on board the boat.
However, the investigations indicate that the episode adds to a series of tragedies recorded on irregular maritime migration routes on the Atlantic coast of Senegal.
