O rotary engine is indelibly linked to the history of Mazda and now the manufacturer is working on solutions to make this kind of propellant more environmentally friendly. So it shows a new patent.
O document this relates to a exhaust gas recirculation system – a resource that Mazda’s old rotary engines did not have, even because there were no environmental regulations as strict as today.
The patent is available at the Patent and Trademarks Department of the United States of America and was consulted by Auto to Minute. It proposes the division of the exhaust paths of the rotary engine housing, with one exhaust feeding the turbocharger and another serving to direct the flow to the engine, with an exhaust gas cooler in the middle – or to the secondary catalyst, depending on the requirements required at each moment.
You can also read in the text that “it is necessary to achieve an improvement in the rotary engine performance and an improvement in the exhaust emission performance“.
It defends Mazda that the proposed solution, with the cooling of gases, enables “to simultaneously improve the performance of the rotary engine and improve the performance of exhaust emissions by a large amount of low temperature gas”. In addition, the drawing allows lower the exhaust gas temperature “without increasing the refrigerator”.
Like any other patent, this does not necessarily mean that Mazda will return to the rotary engines in its range of production sports cars, or that this concept becomes reality. It just shows that the builder is still connected to this kind of thruster that has marked his story.
