A Timor-Leste National Police (PNTL) inaugurated today the National Operational Centre to improve control and risk prevention and crisis management systems.

“ This centre will help to strengthen operational readiness, improve command and control systems, strengthen cooperation between institutions and develop our capacity to prevent risks, manage crises, maintain public order, protect critical infrastructure and ensure community security,” said the commander-general of Timorese police, Commissioner Afonso dos Santos.

The Commissioner spoke at the ceremony attended by Australian Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Richard Marles, who ended a visit to Dili today.

According to Commissioner Afonso dos Santos, as Timor-Leste prepares to take over the presidency of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations in 2029, Australia’s support will have an important value to help the country prepare for “increasing security responsibilities”.

Australia and East Timor renewed on Wednesday the framework for cooperation in the areas of security and defence through support of USD 60 million (EUR 37,5 million) for the next five years, including USD 19 million (11.8 million) to strengthen the Timorese police development programme.

The cooperation framework provides for a strengthening of Timorese police cybersecurity capabilities, the provision of vessels to PNTL to enhance maritime security, support for the development of digital forensic research, and disaster response.

“ This announcement represents a strong demonstration of Australia’s trust in our institution, of the commitment to support the security and stability of East Timor and of the solid and continuous friendship between our two countries,” added the Timorese Police General Commander.
