Why did Ferrari make an electric car from scratch?

In May, Ferrari revealed the controversial Luce – its first 100 percent electric car. It was developed from scratch rather than re-adapting an existing success model in the range. And there's a reason.

O Ferrari Luce it's Ferrari's first 100% electric car. Presented in May, it generated strong criticism from several quadrants, including former leader Luca di Montezemolo.

It is certain that it has been a sales success (e.g. in China, the units allocated there quickly exhausted after opening orders).

It's the first Ferrari with five seats and four doors, it is a luxury sports berlin with more than five meters long and a large trunk of 597 liters – something unique in its history. Just like the huge rims (23 inches ahead, 24 inches behind).

The doors open in opposite directions, in a design signed by Jony Ive's LoveForm (ex-Apple) in collaboration with Ferrari Design Studio – an opening to something radically different that has also been unusual in history.

But why not take a winning formula and adapt it? Global marketing director Emanuele Carando explained to Edmunds: “We could have taken the Pursangu, taken the 12-cylinder engine and placed the battery and the electrical system. But we thought it would not have been the right decision.”.

Instead, the builder opted for a developed platform from scratch and an unprecedented concept in its range at various levels beyond the motorization 100 percent electric.

Emanuele Carando explained: “We did something we couldn't have done without this technology: a spacious car, with very short front hood, which allows the driver to stay very close to the front axle, allowing incredible precision in the curves”.

With four engines (one per wheel), ferrari Luce has full traction and 1,050 hp powerwith 990 Nom of binary. It can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 2.5 seconds and reaches 310 km/h.

Despite being electric, it has a genuine sound – captured by a sensor near the engine and amplified as if it were an electric guitar. The battery, this, has 122 kWh capacity, helping a autonomy that can go up to 530 km.

First copy of Ferrari Luce will be auctioned at millionaire price

The first Ferrari Luce production will be auctioned in August, with a price that can exceed 950,000 euros. It will be during Monterey Car Week in the United States of America. The funds will end in solidarity.
