O Tourism in Porto and Norte de Portugal (TPNP) recorded, between January and September, 12.15 million sleeps, more 5.5% than in the homologous period of 2025, according to official data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE) today released.

In a statement, the TPNP points out that, as a result of this growth in overnight stays, the North region “leads the expansion of tourism in Portugal”.

“ The national growth rate was 1.5%, and the region accounted for 63% of the country's additional stays during this period. The share of Porto and Norte in national stays rose to 18.4%, compared to 17.7% recorded in the same period of 2025 ", adds.

The TPNP also states that “the profits have grown even more than the sleeping ones, reaching a variation of 6.6%”, a performance that “is a relevant indicator of the increasing qualification, appreciation and sustainability of tourism activity in the region”.

In the period analyzed, the statement highlights, “September deserves special attention, with 1.63 million sleeps, the highest value ever for this month (...) recording September a growth of 6.6%, higher than August, which was 4.4%”.

“The occupancy-room rate in the hotel business reached 81%, confirming the extension of the high season to traditionally less filled months,” he said.

In this segment, sleep “has increased by 9.8%, above 4% registered at the national level, while income has increased by 13.8%,” says TPNP, highlighting that “Oporto and North concentrates 31% of national stays in this type of accommodation”.

Spain remained the main external market, with a growth of 4.9%, followed by the United States, which grew 7.8%, highlights.

The United Kingdom, on the other hand, stood out as the fastest growing market in the period, with a rise of 13.8%, underlines the press release.

According to the TPNP, Francisco Sá Carneiro airport has again achieved very positive results, with 13.89 million passengers moving, which corresponds to a 7% increase, above 2.4% of all national airports.

“ These results show that we are still on the right track. We are picking up more and more demanding tourists and bringing more value to the region, while diversifying the issuing markets and strengthening our ability to respond to adverse events worldwide,” said TPNP president Luís Pedro Martins, quoted in the statement.

He also said that “the commitment to the promotion of tourism throughout the territory is bearing fruit, as demonstrated by the excellent results of Tourism in the Rural Area and Housing Tourism”.

For Luís Pedro Martins, this performance “strengthens the region’s offer in the fields of nature, culture, gastronomy and wine tourism and contributes to job creation, economic development, social and territorial cohesion”.
