Um Portuguese who traveled to Hungary to visit his girlfriend after the birth of his son, may be sentenced in the country to effective imprisonment for assaulting the stepfather of the young woman with so much violence that she was at risk of life.

The case dates back to October 2024, but the prosecution was only released yesterday, Thursday, October 29, about two years after the crime. According to Daily News Hungary, the defendant, who is Portuguese but resident in the Netherlands, went to Hungary to be with the companion, who had traveled to the country of origin to have the couple's child.

After delivery, the young woman and her boyfriend stayed at their mother and stepfather's house in Borsod. Everything was fine until the Portuguese started drinking with the owner of the house in the kitchen.

The two spoke by gestures, since they did not master each other's language. For unknown reasons, the situation eventually resulted in a heated discussion.

At one point, the Portuguese slapped his girlfriend's stepfather, and they both got excited. The victim went to the car with his wife to get out of the scene. But the Portuguese, according to the charge, followed them, threw a bag of corn at the windshield of the vehicle and threatened to cut the victim's neck, always by gestures.

Driver got out of the car and tried to keep his rival away with a shovel. The Portuguese took the tool from his hands and broke the rear window of the car.

The victim tried to escape but the defendant reached him and punched him, according to the Hungarian prosecutor (MP), “repeatedly in the head and with considerable force”. With his girlfriend's stepfather on the ground, he kicked him, including his ribs.

The assault didn't stop until the police arrived, alerted by family members. The victim was transported by ambulance to the hospital, where he had to be operated urgently. The prosecution says that he only did not die “for luck”, since the injuries caused could have been fatal.

Portuguese has no criminal record. Despite this, the MP requested that he be sentenced to effective imprisonment, for attempted murder and prohibited from occupying public offices.

The case is now proceeding to court. For the moment, there is still no trial.
