Athe road tolls may increase 3.82% by 2027, confirming the estimate of the annual inflation rate for October, without housing, released today by the INE, plus the 0.1% compensation to concessionaires.

The formula that establishes how the increase in toll prices is calculated each year is provided for in Decree-Law No 294/97 and states that the variation to be practiced each year has as reference the annual inflation rate without housing in the continent verified in the last month for which data are available before November 15.

According to the provisional data released today by the INE, that inflation reference was 3.72%. The definitive value will be disclosed by the INE on November 11.

To this figure adds 0.1%, following the agreement concluded in 2022 by the Government with the motorway concessionaires to compensate them for the brake which was then imposed on an increase of around 10% in 2023.

This is because, in 2022, the annual evolution of prices on the continent, without housing, exceeded the 10%, which led the executive to negotiate with the concessionaires a solution that limited the increase in toll value in 2023 to 4.9%.

At the time, the then Minister of Infrastructure, Pedro Nuno Santos, required that, in addition to the 4.9% increase borne by the highway users, a part (2.8%) were the responsibility of the State, the remaining being “up to 9.5% or 10.5%” supported “by concessionaires”.

As compensation for the 4.9% limit imposed in 2023, it was then established that concessionaires could, in the following four years, increase by more 0.1% the value of updating tolls resulting from the respective concession contracts.

In 2024, 2025 and 2026 tolls were also upgraded to more than 2%.
