Hthese measures are exceptional in this West African country.

These pardons were granted to “improve the conditions of detention, reduce the prison population and promote the social reintegration of the persons granted”, according to the Ministry of Justice.

The measure, decided by decrees signed on Monday, provides for the total pardon of the sentence for 921 convicts, as well as for 21 severely ill detainees, 19 minors and one detained over 65 years old.

Eighteen convicts also benefit from a partial reduction in the sentence, while the life sentence of four convicts has been reduced.

In April last year, 1,121 detainees had benefited from a pardon on the occasion of the day of independence and Korité, a feast that marks the end of the month of Ramadan.

In June of the same year, 1,466 people were graced at the feast of the Aïd el-Kébir, the second and largest feast of Islam.

Today's announcement took place, however, outside these special periods traditionally associated with this type of measure.
