“ Sand Congress hasten to call an extraordinary session to try to regulate the AI, we will miss the race against China,” Mike Johnson told CNN television.
The president of the House of Representatives (the lower chamber of the US Congress) referred to the request of several Democratic MPs to renounce the suspension of parliamentary activities, scheduled for October, in order to concentrate efforts on the adoption of an AI security law.
Mike Johnson added that he called a meeting with the largest companies in the sector, which could happen on Monday or Tuesday.
Also the President of the United States, Donald Trump, has criticized the “negative forces” that seek to slow down the development of the AI, accusing them of talking about “things that will not happen”, at a time when the warnings of the main executives of the sector are added.
On Saturday, the exeutive president (CEO) of Anthropic, Dario Amodei, advocated a slowdown in the development of the new models to allow a better understanding of the risks arising from the AI's capabilities, having received public support from the counterpart of OpenAI, Sam Altman, and Elon Musk, founder of xAI.
The theme has been marking the political agenda in the US since July, when an incident was revealed in which OpenAI AI models spontaneously left their controlled environment during tests to access the Internet and attack Hugging Face's AI platform.
Since then, OpenAI and the main competitor, Anthropic, have reported other similar incidents, of which companies have only been aware days or even months after the events.
In early August, the US government established a regulatory framework that provides for voluntary revision of new AI models before launch, but the measure appears to be opaque and ineffective since Donald Trump has declared opposition to any measure that slows down the development of AI in the United States, whether in relation to the launch of models or the construction of data centers.
