Israeli prosecutor accuses 2 Palestinians of trying to kill Ben-Gvir

The Israeli Military Prosecutor’s Office today accused two Palestinians from the north of the West Bank of, among other crimes, planning in 2024 an assassination attempt by Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir of the far right.

“ A investigation revealed that, in 2024, (...) one of the terrorists proposed to carry out a ‘disco attack’: to wait for the minister to arrive at the scene to assassinate him”, said the police and Shin Bet (Israeli secret services), in a joint communiqué.

The note adds that the defendant later suggested “using a drone loaded with explosives to perpetrate the murder and even attempted to acquire parts of drones in China for that purpose.”.

In addition, the two men, who allegedly were part of a “cell” based in Nablus (north West Bank), are accused of planning attacks, acquiring a large number of illegal weapons, and training by firing real ammunition, as well as recruiting “terrorists”.

Security forces maintain that the planned attacks envisaged the use of “vehicles and drones loaded with explosives” and the kidnapping of Israeli soldiers.

The Military Attorney’s Office today filed the complaint after the Israeli police’s anti-terrorism unit and Shin Bet completed the collection of evidence, and ordered them to remain in custody until the judicial proceedings were completed.

“ I have a message for all these enemies: this will neither dissuade me nor intimidate me”, said Ben-Gvir, in statements released by the channels of his party, Otzma Yehudit (Jewish Power).

Ben-Gvir is the main advocate of the death penalty law approved by the Knesset (Israeli Parliament) in March this year, which stipulates that those convicted of lethal acts of terrorism and tried by a military court (which excludes the Israelis and affects only the Palestinian population) will be automatically sentenced to death unless the court determines special circumstances in favor of life imprisonment.
