“ A UKMTO received a report on an incident in the Strait of Ormuz. An unknown projectile struck a ship as it crossed the strait”, indicated the organization in a statement released on social networks.
UKMTO has stated that it does not yet have information on the situation of crew members, the extent of possible damage to the ship or the possible environmental impact.
In view of the incident, the British Office recommended vessels operating in the area to redouble the precautionary measures and to report any behaviour or activity they consider suspicious while the authorities carry out the necessary investigations.
The warning comes after UKMTO warned last July that the level of risk for commercial navigation in the Ormuz Strait remained “severe”.
On that occasion, the British organisation stressed that despite Iran's announcement of the closure of the strait, the route south of Ormuz remained open to maritime traffic in both directions.
