O Marinha Grande Municipal Civil Protection Service, a municipality seriously affected by the depression Kristin, has a strategic reserve of 22 generators and it is planned to acquire more equipment, today told Lusa agency its coordinator.

According to Pedro Borges, the service currently has 18 light generators and four medium generators, equipment that or were donated by several entities and individuals to the municipality in the critical post-depression period Kristin or were purchased.

“They include the strategic reserve of the Municipal Civil Protection Service,” Pedro Borges explained.

The municipal coordinator of Civil Protection said that a process is underway in the technical services of that House of the district of Leiria for the purchase of more generators, these of great capacity, to “guarantee the minimum conditions of water supply in case of emergency”.

However, the service acquired a drone, with thermal camera, a “tool that allows an aerial visualization, facilitating the identification of damage”, exemplified Pedro Borges.

“ It was used recently to try to locate a woman who was missing and in the fight against a fire in the Industrial Zone of Vieira de Leiria, among other situations ", he said.

In terms of communications, the coordinator advanced that, in a process with the Subregional Emergency and Civil Protection Command of the Leiria Region and the ten municipalities of this Intermunicipal Community, “all have equipment in their respective chambers and municipal civil protection services that allow satellite communications”.

“ The fire department of the municipality, the Marinha Grande and Vieira de Leiria, were assigned satellite communications equipment, to strengthen this connection ", explained Pedro Borges, advancing that the process is underway to acquire a campaign tent and an integrated emergency telecommunications network.

In the latter case, the objective is “to overcome difficulties in case of widespread failure of telecommunications, namely the Siresp [Integrated System of Emergency and Security Networks of Portugal]”, said the municipal Civil Protection officer, stressing that “the goal is to get equipment with different technologies that are redundant”.

Pedro Borges added that these measures are part of the planning work started in March and that also includes the review of the Municipal Emergency Plan for Civil Protection, which is under way.

“In the plan under review, a number of infrastructures were identified that served as support for civil protection operations and many of these infrastructures collapsed with Kristin, but, however, we have already internally defined replacement structures that are not yet shaped in the future plan,” said Pedro Borges.

In this regard, he recalled that “the largest base of Civil Protection operation was the Municipal Exhibition Park”, for population concentration, space that had bathrooms, kitchen or parking.

“With the collapse of the building complex, we had to find alternatives,” the coordinator said, revealing that the Municipal Civil Protection Service is also developing an internal crisis management plan for the House, which aims to prepare and detail procedures for situations similar to that of January 28, when the Kristin depression occurred.

On Monday, at a meeting of the municipal executive, after the subject was raised by a citizen, the mayor, Paulo Vicente, listed the work developed in the field of Civil Protection, sustaining that this is an “evolutionary plan”.

Among other aspects, Paulo Vicente said that local civil protection units are already established in the three parishes of the municipality, with which the articulation work will be done “in case of emergencies”.
