Oprotests began after the Syrian Ministry of Energy announced on Saturday an increase in oil prices, which said it was temporary and justified by “an exceptional increase in the overall cost of purchasing these products”, according to the official news agency Syrian SANA.

The Syrian Human Rights Observatory (OSDH) reported disturbances in several provinces, indicating that the demonstrators blocked the international motorway Deir Ezzor-Alepo, near Huwayjat Shannan, in the province of Raqqa, using burning tires, and interrupted the passage of tankers in other parts of northeastern Syria, including on the Al-Hasakah-Deir Ezzor road.

The Syrian state channel Al-Ikhbariya also reported that protesters blocked the M5 motorway in the rural area south of Idlib, near Maarat al-Numan.

According to the Spanish news agency EFE, in Muhaimida, in the rural area of Deir Ezzor, residents claimed to have prevented security forces from dispersing a demonstration, although this could not be verified independently.

The protesters fear that rising prices will raise transport and food costs in a country that fights to rebuild itself after the fall of Bashar al-Assad.

The Syrian fuel price committee has increased the price of petrol from 95 octane to 28.3%, to 195 new Syrian pounds (1.37 euros) per litre, and the price of diesel oil by 40% to 175 pounds (1.24 euros), the largest increase since the start of the transition. This is the second increase in September, after a minor adjustment last day 04.

Since the beginning of the year, Syria has been the scene of protests about economic issues, such as the value of wages, the price of bread and the cost of living, the EFE is advancing.
