“ Partners for Multilateralism” (P4M) is the initiative launched in a joint article by António Costa, Lula da Silva, William Ruto and Mark Carney published in the Financial Times.
Multilateralism is not idealism, it is a necessity, it defends, it shows worldwide interconnection throughout the text and it argues that “the system of cooperation must be strengthened, not replaced”.
To sustain their position, they oppose the growing economic integration of geopolitical tensions, with values.
“Global trade has reached a record (...) almost three quarters of humanity are connected to the Internet. However, geopolitics is moving in the opposite direction. In 2025 there were 65 armed conflicts between states in 35 countries, the highest number recorded since 1946, and global military spending increased to a record of $2.9 billion” (about €2.45 billion), they write.
The four advocate more representative and effective institutions, and propose an open structure that brings together governments that differ in various matters but share the principles of the United Nations Charter.
The need for multilateral cooperation is “more evident than ever”, they insist, referring to other areas that understand to show this need.
“The climate emergency is surpassing even the most alarming predictions. The AI is advancing faster than our ability to control it. Pandemics can spread across continents in weeks, while financial shocks can destabilize markets in hours,” they wrote.
The promoters of the initiative appeal to other international leaders to join him “in choosing cooperation instead of fragmentation, law instead of power and shared responsibility instead of division.”.
The initiative is released when world leaders will participate in the UN General Assembly this week in New York.
