A Russian Presidency today stated that, regardless of the outcome of the mid-term elections in the United States, President Donald Trump will remain in office, defining the country's foreign policy.
“The President (Donald) Trump will remain in office until the end of the presidential term and will define foreign policy,” said Dmitri Peskov, spokesman for the Russian Presidency, at a press conference.
The spokesman pointed out that this is “an internal US issue,” but added that Russia will follow the US Tuesday elections, “just like the rest of the world.”.
In recent weeks, it has been speculated that a republican defeat in the elections may cause a change in Trump's foreign policy, which has recently intensified criticism of the Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelensky.
Meanwhile, Russian leader Vladimir Putin praised the humanitarian work of American First Lady Melania Trump and Elon Musk, but avoided mentioning the elections.
Before the elections in the United States, Putin and Trump signed an agreement for the supply of Russian diesel — a measure criticised by Kyiv and Brussels — to combat high fuel prices and hence inflation.
As for a possible meeting, soon between the two leaders, Peskov stressed that if Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin are present in mid-November in the Chinese city of Shenzhen — which will host the APEC summit (Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum) — the high-level meeting may take place.
