A car industry remains one of the main activities in Europe, where there are more than 200 factories – from production to assembly of vehicles, through to battery production.
Data from the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA) for Europe (United Kingdom included) point to a total of 260 units of its members. Car, engine and battery manufacturing facilities are accounted for.
But only 100 produce passenger cars and 29 are dedicated to light goods. There are also 61 factories dedicated to the construction of engines and 76 to battery production. A total of 127 factories build electric vehicles.
The data also shows that there are 42 factories that produce buses and 32 that take care of the production of heavy vehicles/trucks.
Out of the statistics are “car suppliers, various manufacturers of small vehicles and engines and custom body manufacturers”. Nor are “transmission factories, bodywork and any other vehicle parts” accounted for.
What about Portugal?
Second the interactive map of ACEA, currently there are two factories producing passenger cars in Portugal: Volkswagen Autoeuropa in Palmela and Toyota Caetano Portugal in Ovar.
Stellantis is added to Mangualde dedicated to light goods vehicles and batteries, with Mitsubishi Fuso in Tramagal riding heavy goods vehicles. Toyota Motor Europe in Vila Nova de Gaia produces buses and Renault in Cacia manufactures hybrid electric motors.
