SEAT may disappear, but it's not the only scenario

The future of SEAT remains open and there are no decisions yet. This summer there were rumours about a possible extinction of the Spanish brand, in the context of tightness and financial restraint for the Volkswagen Group.

Nthe last few months, the future of SEAT has been in doubt, with the possibility of the Volkswagen Group withdrawing the brand and concentrating its efforts on the Cupra – in a context of financial difficulties.

In an interview with the British publication Autocar, Executive Director Markus Haupt explained: “We have different scenarios on the table and, yes, there is a scenario in which discontinuation could be reality“.

Having said that, the leader made a point of reassuring the buyers of a Martorell brand model if extinction is the way: “Even if that happens someday, we will still give 15 years of brand maintenance. So there is no real panic over any decision.”.

What factors can influence the decision?

According to Markus Haupt, market regulation and performance will be aspects that dictate the fate of SEAT: “There are many regulations. Now we know that carbon dioxide is already playing a big role, but from 2030 it will be even more difficult. But there may be flexibility and this could have a direct impact on our decision-making process. The geopolitical environment and also the customer experience and the speed of electrification are things that will define whether SEAT is still needed after this period.”.

For now, there is no established date for knowing the future of SEAT, something that according to its executive “will be determined by customer regulations and behavior“.

For now, the investment continues and the brand continues to be part of the strategy, with the Arona and Ibiza on the rail with mild-hybrid motorization – whose arrival is already scheduled for 2027.

Investing in SEAT is becoming “more and more challenging”

These statements by Markus Haupt did not bring any substantial news in the light of what Volkswagen Group executive director Oliver Blume said about a month ago: “Several scenarios continue to be possible beyond 2030. Depending on how regulations evolve, customer demand and market conditions could include a gradual discontinuation of the SEAT brand. No final decision was made. Maintaining this flexibility is essential.”.

The same leader acknowledged at the time that the current environment of the automobile industry, with the electrification and investment needed to develop new models, is becoming “more and more challenging” to invest in SEAT.

End of Seat is really among the options of the Volkswagen Group

Last week, the German press said that the Seat brand could have its days numbered and disappear from 2030 – in the context of the restructuring under way in the Volkswagen Group. It's a real hypothesis, but there are no decisions.
