O President of the Republic stresses today, on World and European Day against the Death Penalty, its “total and absolute opposition to capital punishment”, which qualifies as “a cruel, inhuman and degrading act”.

In a message published on the official website of the Presidency of the Republic on the Internet, António José Seguro states that “it is encouraging that the number of abolitionist countries is increasing” and “he welcomes the recent step taken by Lebanon, which has become the first country in the Middle East to abolish the death penalty”.

“ However, despite the progress made, the number of executions is very high and there is still much to be done to ensure that the penalty is definitively abolished throughout the world. The World and European Day against the Death Penalty is therefore an important opportunity to renew the commitment to this goal”, he adds.

The head of state stresses, on this date, “its total and absolute opposition to capital punishment”, considering that “in addition to its irreversible nature, the death penalty is incompatible with human dignity, constituting a cruel, inhuman and degrading act”.

António José Seguro also reaffirms “the commitment of Portugal, as a pioneer country in the abolition of the death penalty, with this universal abolition of the capital punishment, which had the opportunity to reiterate a few days ago in Strasbourg, in its speech to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, an organization that constitutes a death penalty-free space”, reads the note.
