The Sports Pavilion City of Viseu was the stage chosen for another decisive duel between Sporting and Benfica, which put forward the lions, current two national champions and holders of the Cup of Portugal, and the incarnates, finalists won in both competitions previously mentioned.
João Coelho's commanders therefore left with some favoritism for this match, especially for the 11 consecutive victories against the main rival. And that favorite condition turned out to be justified during the match.
Despite the absence of Edson Valencia, again away by technical option due to some physical problems, the green and white prolonged the leonin hegemony in the modality, after two seasons of clear superiority in the national panorama, and before a rival who is in full recovery process after the arrival of the new coach, the Greek Sakis Psarras.
The derby began with a strong pace by Sporting who took the lead of the first set with a three point advantage (7-4). As the minutes passed, the meeting became balanced and Benfica still reduced the disadvantage to 21-20, but the lions responded decisively and closed the inaugural match for 25-22.
