Tiago Bettencourt recalled on his Instagram page the images of a concert he performed at Casa da Música in December 2023. At the time, during the show, the musician had a “short tribute” to Jorge Palma “for the value he had in his way”.
Promising to make “many more” tributes to Jorge Palma, “to celebrate this deep love that spread for all of us, in the form of songs”, Tiago Bettencourt also spoke about his connection to the singer he admired so much.
“ When I met Jorge Palma's music around my 18th birthday on a tape of the album "Only" that Pedro Puppe had in his Fiat Panda, it was as if a new branch of Portuguese music opened up in my soul. Suddenly there was a voice that unpretentiously became a symbol of the end of my adolescence and beginning of anything that I did not know what it was”, he recalled.
“There was in that naturality in singing a mystery, a charm, a poison, but light, pain but sereneness, and faith in anything imperfect but sacred. I was in the first year of Architecture and already heard a lot of Portuguese music as fado as well, read the poets, sang the songs, but nothing that showed me a path where I could unconsciously fit in, or encourage me to start a new and inconsequential (I thought) activity: Writing songs”, he then recalled.
“ So he moved on, and I made it up from there. Many years later I was lucky enough to meet Jorge, tender, human, honest, open hugging. I sang with him several times, immensely happy, and never take him off the ethereal pedestal where I always saw him, and see him”, completed.
In turn, Miguel Araújo published on his Instagram page a video where he appears to interpret the has “Bairro do Amor”, which Jorge Palma released in the 1970s.
Jorge Palma, remember, died on Monday night, September 21, at the age of 76, “victim of a cardiorespiratory arrest”.
