O TC decided to admit Gilson Alves, Joana Rosa, José Maria Neves, Antero Tavares and Casimiro Pina, for considering the legal conditions of their applications.
José Maria Neves, President of the Republic and candidate for a second term, is supported by the African Independence Party of Cape Verde (PAICV, power), while former minister Joana Rosa has the support of the Movement for Democracy (MpD, opposition).
Gilson Alves is a doctor, Casimiro Pina jurista and Antero Tavares judge.
José Maria Neves, Gilson Alves and Casimiro Pina repeat the presidential race of 2021, when six candidates were on the ballot.
Neves then won the first round, with 51.79% of the votes, corresponding to 96.035 votes, while Casimiro Pina obtained 1.8% (3,345) and Gilson Alves 0.76% (1.410).
The order rejects the applications of Jorge Luís dos Santos, Amadeu Fortes Oliveira, Fernando Rocha Delgado, Loisito Tavares de Sousa and Jacinto Spencer dos Santos.
In the case of Amadeu Oliveira, lawyer and former deputy convicted in 2022 to seven years of effective imprisonment in a case related to the escape of a client convicted of murder, the TC considered that it is covered by “temporary inability to exercise political office”.
Jorge Luís dos Santos and Jacinto Spencer dos Santos saw applications rejected for “unlawfulness and irregularities that were not met”, while Fernando Rocha Delgado and Loisito Tavares de Sousa were excluded for “irregularities that were not supplied”.
The court also accepted the withdrawal of Pericles Tavares.
The Cape Verdean presidential elections take place on 15 November and the election campaign officially starts on 29 October.
