O american president Donald Trump banned three media outlets, including CNN, having alleged “the constant ‘reproduction’ of false news.” As a form of support for the television station, other media decided to suspend the coverage of Trump. After all, what is going on between Donald Trump and the media?
The dispute between Trump and the media is not new. However, it has now reached new levels.
It all started on Friday, September 18, when Donald Trump, through social networks, announced that “with immediate effects”, banned “the ‘fake news’ CNN, MSNOW [...] and the Politico from entering the White House due to the constant ‘reproduction’ of false news”.
The US President also considered that the media “should not be constantly writing or reproducing fiction and lies” when talking about the president, his administration or his own country.
Credentials seized by Secret Service
The day after the announcement, the press credentials of the White House of CNN and MS NOW teams were seized by the Secret Service.
After this position, MS NOW announced that “the White House belongs to the American people and the decisions that are taken within them are financed with our taxes.”.
MS NOW also assured that it supports its presenters, reporters and writers and will continue to “inform on the President, the Administration and the issues affecting the American people.”.
In turn, CNN stated that its “mission to inform about the United States government will continue regardless of any attempt to restrict physical access to the White House and other government buildings, or any attempt to obstruct our journalism.”.
Bodies prohibited from entering the White House sue Trump administration
By Monday, September 21st, cNN, MS Now and Politico have announced that they will proceed with a lawsuit under the First Amendment.
It should be noted that several experts in the First Amendment to the US Constitution, which protects fundamental freedom of the press, among others, have widely classified prohibition as unconstitutional and condemned it as “abrupt, discriminatory and harmful” to the media’s ability to cover national issues.
The emergency request will be submitted to a federal judge of the Washington District Court and may result in legal hearings and allegations by the administration this week.
“In the morning, we notified the government that we are filing a lawsuit today to protect our rights under the First Amendment and defend the principle that the government does not decide what the press reports or publishes”, said the three media organizations in a joint statement.
“ Without warning or process, the White House revoked the credentials of our journalists because it opposed our coverage,” the media said.
The three media said that “if it is not contested, this threatens freedom of the press and the right of the public to independent journalism free of government interference.”.
Offensive against “false news”?
This Monday, and again through social networks, Donald Trump accused some of the press of representing “a threat to national security”.
In a publication in Truth Social, the President of the United States said he was carrying out an offensive against “fake news” by vetoing entry into the White House to media journalists CNN, MS NOW and Politico.
“The White House is not attacking press freedom, something I value very much. He is attacking a problem that has spread like cancer in our beloved United States of America,” Trump said, considering that this “is a threat to national security and must be stopped now!”
Solidarity between the media
Well, after Trump banished the three media, the US chains CBS, NBC, ABC and Fox have solidarized with CNN and will therefore no longer cover the activities of the president, this is an unprecedented initiative since the republican's return to power.
“ As of today, the television pool will not cover the events in which the president participates and which fall under the competence of the pool, said Bryan Boughton, Fox representative and organizer of this group of channels, who is responsible for filming the American leader throughout the day and distributing the images thus produced.
“It is vital for the general public to receive correct and independent information about the government. No administration should restrict the access of a media agency because it does not agree with its coverage”, indicated, for its part, the five channels of the presidential pool in a statement.
“You’re not banning the media,” says JD Vance
This second holiday, the Vice President of the United States, JD Vance, stated that Donald Trump “is not banning the media,” justifying that the president “will not give them special access to the White House if they devote themselves to what is actually propaganda.”.
“ We should remember that about 92% of the news that these three media publish about the President of the United States and its administration is negative,” he said before traveling to Greensboro, North Carolina, to speak at a mid-term election campaign rally.
After stating that the media prevented access do not represent the “American people” or the “public opinion” and accuse them of being “extreme left propaganda”, he asked: “Why would a Republican White House give them special access?”
Asked if it is considered an attack on freedom of expression, Vance said that “they can still report on the White House of Trump”.
“ You can still get the public reports. You can still, of course, talk to people inside and outside the administration. What the President said was that we will not give them special access inside the White House ", defended.
Trump’s ‘bad relationship’ with the media is not now..
Last year, the access of the Associated Press (AP) to some presidential events was restricted because the publication refused to adopt the designation “Golf of America” to speak of the Gulf of Mexico – this new episode opens a new chapter, starting the assumed blocking of access to information.
