“ Aby 2030, our space transport zones should grow to allow more than 1,000 launches and re-entrys per year,” Trump established in the Presidential Memorandum on National Security, signed and released by the US Presidency on Thursday.

The objective represents a significant increase in US space activity, after the United States held less than 200 orbital launches in 2025, the vast majority through SpaceX, the multimillion-dollar company Elon Musk.

Trump intends to promote the development of new space transport infrastructure in collaboration with private companies and has entrusted the Secretary of Transport and Defense and the administrator of the U.S. Space Agency NASA to identify, in the next six months, new suitable launch sites.

The document updates the US space strategy and incorporates several measures and guidelines adopted since Trump's return to the White House in January 2025.

Among the priorities is the reduction of environmental barriers to the space industry, in a deregulation strategy to facilitate the expansion of the private sector.

According to the memorandum, NASA also receives the mission of “facilitating commercial transport to and from the Moon”, promoting commercial robotic access to Mars and exploring commercial solutions to transport human beings to the planet and allowing them to return to Earth.

“ The policies outlined in this memorandum will ensure the continued superiority of the United States in space,” Trump said.

The update of the strategy takes place in a context of growing space competition with China, which has significantly developed its programs in the last three decades and intends to send astronauts to the Moon for the next four years.

Trump stated in the spring to believe that American astronauts will return to the lunar surface before the end of his mandate in 2028.
