Segundo a agency France-Presse, those X accounts, some with tens of thousands of followers, are no longer accessible without a VPN (private virtual network) from Turkey.
Among the blocked accounts are a LGBT+ rights organization, KAOS GL, and the human rights lawyer and activist Levent Piskin.
Homosexuality is not a crime in Turkey, but homophobia is widespread, including in the highest levels of government, with the President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, described LGBT+ people as “perverts” threatening the traditional family, says AFP.
Turkish courts regularly order social network X to block access to the accounts of opposition figures, activists and journalists.
The X account of the AFP correspondent in the southeast of the country, predominantly Kurdish region, which has more than 50,000 followers, has been inaccessible since March.
Last year, the Turkish authorities managed to block more than 700 critical government accounts at the height of a wave of protests triggered by the arrest of opposition mayor Ekrem Imamoglu of Istanbul.
