O "Obsession" horror film became one of the most spoken of the year when it debuted in the Portuguese cinemas in May, becoming not only one of the most profitable films of all time but also catapulting Inde Navarrette's career to star.
Despite having had a budget of only $750,000 (US$668,000), Obsession managed to reach some impressive US$522.8 million (EUR465.6 million) from a global box office.
If you're interested in watching this movie or maybe reviewing it, know that “Obsession” already has Netflix release scheduled for next November.
Netflix announced on its social networks that “Obsession” will arrive at the streaming service in the US on November 17. However, it is not currently known whether this release will also take place in more markets so we will have to wait for the November programming to know if Portuguese Netflix subscribers will also be able to see “Obsession”.
“Obsession” tells the story of a boy who, in love with a friend, decides to use a mysterious object to wish that she loves him more than anything in the world. The desire comes true, but the protagonist will eventually realize that his desire is about to create more problems than he thought.
The arrival of “Obsession” to Netflix arrives shortly after director Curry Barker told him that the company was one of the parties interested in acquiring the horror film.
Netflix failed to purchase “Obsession”
Barker recalled in an interview for the podcast Q with Tom Power that, when the film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in September 2025, was considered not to release the film in the movie theaters and only on streaming via Netflix.
Barker recalls that the audience of the festival reacted positively to the display of “Obsession”, but that it had still been doubtful whether the audience of different markets would have the same kind of opinion.
The next day, Barker woke up with a series of messages and missed calls, with the agent himself reporting that there were several stakeholders interested in distributing the film. Among them, according to the director of 27, was Netflix.
“ I think that at some point Netflix was involved in conversations.”, revealed Barker. “They launched a proposal to take [‘Obsession’] directly on Netflix”.
Although the passage through the cinemas had been favorable to “Obsession”, it is worth remembering that there were other films that were released on Netflix and also achieved success – with “KPop Demon Hunters” to be the latest example with regard to new intellectual and franchise properties.
