A position is contained in the final communiqué, released today, of the Fourth Ordinary Meeting of the Standing Committee of the Political Commission, which took place on Friday in the Uige.
UNITA reiterates “the commitment to the consolidation of the Wide Patriotic Front for the Alternance of Power”, which in the elections of 2022 managed to elect 90 deputies to the National Assembly, against the 124 MPLA (Popular Movement of Liberation of Angola), which governs Angola since independence.
UNITA's strategy is to recover the experience, although previous partners, the Democratic bloc and the PRA-JA project, are currently defending their own strategies or other opposition associations.
The delegates at the Uíge “blessed the initiative of the United Patriotic Front for its impact on the results achieved in 2022 and encouraged” the president of UNITA, Adalberto Costa Júnior, “to continue the path” that led to the “historical result”, in 2022, of 90 mandates in parliament.
The resolutions, says the final statement, “aim to reaffirm UNITA’s firm determination to gather Angolans on a broad patriotic front to operate political alternation in 2027.”.
The Permanent Committee of the Black Gallus Party expressed deep concern and condemned what classifies “political crimes and the restriction of fundamental freedoms” attributed to the regime, and complained “the need to ensure a truly plural, democratic and inclusive political environment, especially at this stage when the country is approaching the general elections of 2027”.
UNITA’s Standing Committee “calls on the institutions involved in the process of updating electoral registration and assigning identity cards in rural areas and disadvantaged neighborhoods to the need to boost and increase the number of brigades”.
As an example, he cites “the difficulties in the municipalities of Chitado, in the province of Cunene, Golungo Alto, in the province of Cuanza Norte”, among others.
At this meeting, UNITA reiterated “the importance of independent, comprehensive and credible international electoral observation, which must follow all stages of the electoral process”.
The Standing Committee calls on militants, sympathizers and Angolan citizens “to actively participate in raising awareness of electoral citizens to update their electoral data as an essential condition for full voting rights in 2027”.
UNITA further welcomes the reception by the Uíge population, where it returned to the Permanent Committee meeting, without incident, after the clashes between police and militants in a party activity at the same place on August 8.
