A Order of Veterinary Doctors (OMV) today delivers to the Assembly of the Republic a petition that collected about 8,000 signatures, by Tuesday, with the purpose of lowering the VAT of veterinary services for pet animals.

The petitioners advocate a tax reduction from the present 23% to 6%.

The number of signatures collected, after being validated, requires discussion of this initiative in plenary.

According to the Order, the “expressive adherence” to the petition proves to be a concern that goes far beyond the profession, mobilizing citizens from all over the country who recognize the importance of making veterinary care more accessible.

OMV considers, in a statement, that the surrender of the petition marks a decisive moment in this discussion, taking into account “the broad popular support achieved” and the “growing awareness of society” for the role of veterinary medicine in the protection of animal health and public health.

The Order met with political parties with parliamentary representation in recent weeks to defend the reduction of VAT on pet veterinary medicine services in the State Budget for 2027.

“ The political parties now have the opportunity to show, once and for all, the priorities they defend on a subject that has an impact on the lives of a very significant number of people, since it is estimated that 2.2 million families have at least one pet”, said the bastonary, Pedro Fabrica, quoted in the statement that OMV today publishes.
