ANDm statements to the agency Lusa, the vice president of the chamber of Vimioso, Cristina Miguel, said that in this county the moon will cover 99.4% of the sunlight, being the meeting point of the connoisseurs of these phenomena in the Iberian Park of Nature and Adventure (PINTA), where there will be the distribution of protective glasses and practical teaching classes for the observation of the eclipse.
According to the mayor of this municipality of the district of Bragança, the program includes preparation for observation of the eclipse and the night sky, accompanied by workshops of astronomy and nature, with a view to better perception and security during the observation of the phenomenon.
“ We will begin this set of activities first on the morning of August 12, where we will have an introduction to the observation of the eclipse, through interactive experiences within the astronomy observatory existing in the PINTA so that people do not arrive at the time of the eclipse without information and security to observe it ", avenged Cristina Miguel.
According to Cristina Miguel, on the same day there will still be a workshop for the construction of sunscreens, as a way of introducing security measures, to observe the total eclipse of the sun.
“ Solar protectors for indirect observation of the eclipse will be made with materials used in everyday life, being a safer way for children. In other words, besides being made the distribution of glasses for the observation of the phenomenon, we have here the construction of other protectors for the solar vision ", indicated.
The municipality had scheduled the observation of the eclipse to the area of the quarry, but, due to the possible risk of fire, the observation will be made in the Atalaia de Vimioso.
“ Here will be a team of technicians that will help people to respect observation standards, so that there are no possible visual injuries without proper protection ", avenged Cristina Miguel.
After this event, which should also attract Spanish neighbors and other people from various points of the country, there will be a session dedicated to star observation at the PINTA.
The eclipse of the sun happens when the Earth, the moon and the sun are aligned, and the moon totally or partially hidden the solar disk for a few moments.
Only in the villages of Rio de Onor and Guadramil, in the municipality of Bragança, can be seen in its entirety, i.e., the Moon cover 100% the Sun. Still, it can be partially observed throughout the country and islands.
“Being [visible to] 99%, 99.9% or 98% is almost the same. There is a small difference when you stay at night, which is only at one point, but there are some contingencies in relation to this matter, there you see stars during the day, per night, it is very short, it is 26 seconds and eventually you will see the solar crown ", recently stressed in Bragança the national commissioner for the eclipse of the Sun 2026, Pedro Machado.
In addition to the darkness, other events, such as shadows, are expected in the shape of the sun, and wind. “The eclipse wind will be seen all over the country, the projection under the apertures, the solar disk, with the eclipse going on, will be seen all over the country, even in the Azores and Madeira,” added the astrophysicist.
In Portugal, the total eclipse will not happen again for more than 100 years. However, as early as next year this rare phenomenon can be seen in southern Spain and Tunisia. In Portugal, the last total eclipse took place in 1912.
