Viviane recreates themes of women who made their way in Portuguese music

Viviane’s new album, “Ela por Elas”, going out on Friday, corresponds to a challenge that the performer made to herself, to recreate themes of women who paved the way for interpreters like her.

“ It was a challenge that I proposed to myself, and I like these challenges very much and this was particularly interesting, to hold on to these feminine voices that marked me, to give my personal character and a new life to these songs, so as not to let them fall into oblivion and, I am sure, that when they hear [the creators] will like it,” Viviane said in an interview with the Lusa agency.

The album, exclusively in digital format, consists of eight songs, from performers linked to groups that marked the Portuguese music scene in the late twentieth century and early 21st century, from Xana, from Radio Macau, to Mitó Mendes, from A Naifa, or Né Ladeiras, from Banda do Casaco.

Viviane stated that it was their voices that led her to choose the songs, which she proposes “a new outfit, making them slower, to be heard in another way, with more attention, contrasting with a hasty time” of today.

The choice of themes “parted, fundamentally, from two: ‘Alfama’, from the Mler Ife Dada, sung by Anabela Duarte, a deconstructed fado, just sung with bass and voice, which I still love and which I still sing in my concerts, the other is ‘Amor Errante’, from the Diva, played by Natália Casanova, who listened immensely when I was taking the first steps with the Entre Aspas”.

To Lusa, Viviane said she wanted to record these songs because they are from singers who influenced her: “And why not go get songs from singers who sang in iconic bands of Portuguese music, which were striking and influenced my course, and this is my tribute to all these singers who pioneered and paved the way for others, like me, to make their way in music.”.

“ To play these songs I really tried to forget the originals and, with the help of my phone, I recorded the first impulse, the first way I played these songs, as if I had never heard them. I put myself out of my own mind to observe how I would do them, how I would interpret them. And it was this moment that served as inspiration to record them, keeping this initial pleasure of recording them”.

Among the chosen interpreters, Lena d’Água “was unavoidable”, and the singer of the Fruit Salad chose a theme that he did not know, “As if it were Tua”.

Of the eight songs chosen, Viviane highlighted “It’s Too Much”, das Doce, formed by Fátima Padinha, Laura Diogo, Lena Coelho and Teresa Miguel.

“ Because it is a song that comes out a bit of the format of others, in which I decided to make a different approach, creating several textures with different voices, and it was super fun to make arrangement for this song”, he said.

The album opens with “Alfama” and also includes “Wandering Love”, “The Spring Swallow” of Madredeus, by the voice of Teresa Salgueiro, and “Cantiga d’Amor (Seven So)”, by Rádio Macau, “Music”, played by Mitó Mendes, dos A Naifa, and “Salvé Maravilha”, recorded by Banda do Casaco with the voice of Né Ladeiras.

Viviane recorded the album with Tó Viegas, on Portuguese guitar, Filipe Valentim, on keyboards, and João Vitorino, on viola, musicians with whom she presents the album on October 6th, at Teatro da Trindade, in Lisbon, and on October 28th, also in Sala 2 of Casa da Música, in Porto.

Viviane began her solo career in 2005, with the album "Amores Perfect", after the end of the band Entre Aspas, of which she was co-founder. Throughout his career he was part of the Blue Chameleon, Front Line and Rua da Saudade projects.

“She for them” follows “When You Have Time” (2022).
