Lamine Yamal continues to try to apply for the 2026 Golden Ball Award by giving an extensive interview to the French press published this Wednesday, at a time when there is pause for the commitments of national selections.
“The Golden Ball is the trophy that holds the best player of the year, the exceptional and unique player, the one who is a pleasure to watch play, to the point of watching a game just because of it. I think that's what distinguishes a player. It has nothing to do with the number of goals scored or anything. Fortunately, I won many titles with Barça and managed to win the most important title, the World Cup, with my national team. But, besides, I believe that my style of gambling is my strong point, which distinguishes me from others, and I think all this makes me a good candidate”, he started by saying in statements to the L’Equipe.
As to how he can further improve his campaign, the Spanish extreme has ensured that he wants to win more titles, pointing to seven or eight La Liga trophies, as well as a total of six Golden Balls and at least try to go for three consecutive Champions Leagues.
“It is always possible to improve. I won three La Liga titles, and in my head, I want to win at least seven or eight. I hope to conquer many more. I haven't won the Champions League yet, and I want to win it. And if I win one, knowing PSG won two straights, I want to win three straights. And if I don't win the Golden Ball, I have to win it the next year. And if I win it, I want to win five more”, he promised.
About the Champions League campaign of 2024/25, Yamal was very clear that if it were repeated in the middle, the game would never have ended with a draw.
“ If we were to replay the game against Inter right now, I don't think we'd ever, under any circumstances. We are a young team: there are decisions made in a fraction of a second and, at 20, we approach them differently than at 30. This applies to me and all my teammates. I think it is precisely these details, a hint of luck and the experience that we are improving and improving. Let’s hope this is really our year”, concluded the player of Barcelona.
To remember that Lamine Yamal won the Spanish League by the Catalan club, having also won the 2026 World Cup by Spain, being one of the highlights on both fronts, with a total of 57 matches held between club and national team, contributing with 25 goals scored and 20 assists in all competitions last season.
