Lisboa, 11 Sep 2026 (Lusa) – The Portuguese Ministry of Foreign Affairs today marked the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks in the United States, stating that the tragedy continues to be “a wound in the world’s memory”.
“A moment that profoundly changed our way of looking at freedom, security and international order”, he said, in a message published on social networks, in which he underlines the importance of solidarity.
“The commotion and solidarity of all has been and will always be the defeat of terror,” said the ministry led by Paulo Rangel, ensuring that the day will be to remember “the thousands of victims and their families” and honor the American people.
The United States today marks a quarter of a century since the September 11 attacks, which caused 2,977 deaths, including nine Portuguese and Portuguese victims, and constituted the most deadly terrorist attack committed in North American territory.
The attacks were conducted by the terrorist group Al-Qaeda.
Two hijacked planes hit the World Trade Center Twin Towers in New York City, causing the buildings to collapse two hours after impact, while a third device hit the Pentagon (D.O.D. Headquarters) outside Washington.
A fourth plane, believed to target the Capitol or the White House, crashed near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, after passengers and crew members tried to regain control of the aircraft.
The attacks triggered profound changes in the United States' foreign and security policy but also worldwide, including the launch of the so-called ‘war on terrorism’ and military intervention in Afghanistan.
