Adishwashers require regular maintenance to ensure their effectiveness and durability.
However, when this care is not taken seriously, besides calling into question the cleaning and disinfection of dishes, there is the possibility of bad odors.
Experts have revealed to Martha Stewart's website reasons that might be behind this.
1. Rest of food trapped
“The main reason why the dishwasher gets a bad odor after washing is the filter,” explained cleaning professional Henry Andersone.
So when you clean the machine, it is important to remove the filter and wash it. You should use warm water, degreasing detergent and an old toothbrush to get to the toughest places.
2. Unsuitable drainage
Even a small amount of still water may be the source of bad odors, as there is the possibility of bacteria developing there.
“ Dirty water can return to the machine due to a clogged pipe or inappropriate installation,” says Dennis Godynuk, owner of Comfort Appliance Repair.
Thus, after a cycle, you should check for accumulated water at the bottom. If there is, clean the filter and then check the drainage area and see if there are visible residues.
3. Fat and waste
“ The dishwashers are designed to grind food and fat, but over time, detergent residues, oils and mineral deposits can accumulate,” explains Amy Chernobyl, marketing vice president and home appliances expert at AJ Madison. This accumulation may retain odors even after the end of the washing cycle.
Therefore, cleaning of the “walls” of the machine as well as rubbers is recommended. Then cycle with the empty machine, adding cleaning vinegar and baking soda.
4. Blocked spray items
If the small holes in the spray arms become obstructed by food particles, the water may not circulate properly. Poor circulation results in waste on the plates and the machine itself.
If the model allows, remove the sprinkler arms and see if they are obstructed. You can use a toothpick or brush to clean them.
5. Water temperature
Another reason for the bad odors could be a resistance that broke. When this happens, the machine uses water at room or cold temperature, which is not effective for the elimination of bacteria that cause bad odor.
6. Dirty door rubbers
The door seal rubber is usually forgotten at cleaning time and one of the reasons for the bad odor. You should wipe it with an old cloth and toothbrush with warm water and soap. In the end, make sure the rubber is quite dry.
7. Faulty drainage pump
The drainage pump could also be a cause of bad odors. Normally, this piece begins to cause problems after 10 years, due to wear or even excess foam.
8. Mold
Inside the machine, given the humidity, there is the possibility of mold appearing. You can remove it with cleansing vinegar and a cloth and then put the washing machine alone.
