Na note, the Regional Secretary of Economics, José Manuel Rodrigues, “welcomes the outcome of the negotiation process that allowed to ensure the gas supply to the Autonomous Region of Madeira, despite the ongoing strike of the workers of REN Atlantic”, which takes place since Sunday and extends until Tuesday.
The archipelago government points out that “in the wake of the efforts made tonight in Lisbon, the Union of Workers of Transforming Industries, Energy and Environmental Activities of the South (SITE Sul) gave indications for the loading of six gas tanks to the Autonomous Region of Madeira”.
It is also “assured that all the initially planned quantities will be loaded and transported to Lisbon, then to Caniçal”, in Madeira.
According to the governor, “this solution allows us to safeguard the region’s supply and avoid constraints for families, businesses and public services.”.
“ We welcome the fact that it was possible to achieve a solution that ensures gas supply to Madeira,” says José Manuel Rodrigues, quoted in the document.
For the executive, it was “fundamental to ensure that the region would not be deprived of an essential good, especially in a period of strike that could cause significant difficulties for the population and economic activity”.
The sense of responsibility shown by the parties involved in the process is therefore highlighted: “We appreciate the collaboration of the Government of the Republic, the operational bodies and the trade union structures, which has enabled us to find a concrete response to the needs of Madeira.”
The workers of the Atlantic REN, responsible for the operation of the liquefied natural gas terminal (LNG) of Sines (Setúbal district) are on strike from Sunday and until Tuesday to demand a pre-reform regime that compensates for the wear associated with shift work.
The standstill was called by the SITE South syndicate and the Fiequimetal federation and integrates a claim process that, according to representative structures, has been taking place since 2012.
