Hthere are several foods that, even after they have passed validity, can still be consumed. However, these deadlines should not be ignored in certain cases for safety reasons.

Food scientists and safety experts have revealed food that should always be discarded on Martha Stewart's website.

1. Cheese and milk products

There are cheeses, like brie, mozarella and goat, that even if they don't smell or look bad, they have to go to waste.

“ These foods tend to be unsafe for consumption, regardless of appearance and smell, because they can house dangerous microorganisms that do not need a lot to cause diseases, especially in people with a weak immune system,” explains food scientist Bryan Quoc Le.

In question are microorganisms such as E. coli, salmonella and listeria.

Cheese is very sensitive to temperature variations, so when it is taken away several times from the refrigerator or stored at an inappropriate temperature, this can accelerate the growth of bacteria.

2. Seafood and meat

Studies have shown that bacterial growth, especially in red meats, only decreases – but does not cease – with proper packaging and storage.

The fruits of the sea, like fish, do not escape the rule. Researchers have found that cold alone is not enough to ensure an adequate service life. “The storage of seafood at freezing temperatures is currently the only technology that ensures its conservation for long periods,” the study highlights.

3. Cooked rice or pasta

Roasted rice and dough can become dangerous after being stored, especially if they have slowly cooled or left out of the refrigerator for some time.

A study of 2021, made by the Valencia Institute of Agricultural Chemistry and Food Technology, noted that Bacillus cereus spores can survive cooking and persist in starch-rich foods (such as rice or pasta), and can multiply in favorable conditions and produce toxins that reheating does not always destroy.

Risk of colorectal cancer may increase with these common foods

Processed meats, processed foods rich in sugar and refined grains can increase the risk of colorectal cancer when consumed in excess, alert experts. Know the four food groups you should moderate to help protect the health of the intestine and reduce the risk of the disease.
