Guterines argued that a common international position can prevent the “future of humanity” from being left to the “taste of improvisation” before artificial intelligence technologies.
“The choice we have ahead is not between blind trust in AI and fear of it. It is between well-planned and organized governance and an uncertain course, delivered to chance”, warned António Guterres.
The UN Secretary-General spoke at the opening of the first global meeting on the Government of the IA in Geneva.
“Vibe-coding (the creation of computer code by people without technical expertise) can do wonders, but we cannot define the future of humanity on the basis of ‘vibe-coding’,” Guterres added.
In early May, Pope Leo XIV’s encyclical, “Magnifica Humanitas” defended strict regulation of artificial intelligence, especially as the technological industry creates increasingly sophisticated methods of remote warfare, in addition to social and labor-related issues.
The encyclical stated that “it was not admissible” to entrust lethal and irreversible decisions to AI systems.
