O Mozambican National Institute of Standardization and Quality (INNOQ) announced today the strengthening of the monitoring of bread weight in Mozambique, forcing establishments to make verified scales available to consumers and warning for sanctions in case of non-compliance.
In a statement, the INNOQ states that the measure aims to ensure compliance with metrological legislation and consumer protection in the production and marketing of bread, adding that the breadmakers must ensure that the bread is produced and marketed in accordance with the legally established nominal weights.
It also points out that sales outlets are obliged to post tables with their weights and prices in a visible location.
The public institution shall also provide that all places for the marketing of bread have properly checked scales with a valid metrological check mark placed in accessible places so that consumers can check the weight of the product purchased.
In order to ensure compliance with the provisions, the INNOQ announces the implementation of metrological control and supervision actions with establishments for the production and marketing of bread throughout the national territory, warning: “Failure to comply with applicable legal provisions may determine the adoption of administrative and sanctioning measures provided for in the legislation in force”.
The Office considers that compliance with these measures will contribute to increasing transparency of trade transactions, strengthening consumer protection and promoting confidence in the national market.
