Athe French health authorities claimed to have first detected the Shamonda virus in a human being. The patient ended up dead.
However, the French authorities state that there is no risk to the general population at this stage.
The Shamanda virus is an orthobunyavirus transmitted by insects that primarily affects cattle, especially cattle, and is transmitted by stinging mosquitoes.
It is recalled that the Order of Veterinary Doctors confirmed last week the existence of the Shamunda virus (SHAV) in Portugal.
Shamonda virus
SHAV, which belongs to the genus Orthobunyavirus and the serogroup Simbu, is transmitted mainly by the bite of small insects of the genus Culicoides (vectors) and bovine animals are particularly susceptible to infection by this virus and may present with fever, diarrhoea, prostration and reduction of milk production, it is said.
In pregnant females, infection may also be associated with abortions and fetal malformations.
On the other hand, sheep and goats can be infected, usually without clear clinical signs, the note states.
The Order of Doctors, however, stresses that “there is no evidence that the Shamunda virus is zoonotic, and there is no known risk of transmission to humans”.
